Unite comment following Prime Minister’s visit to Halifax staff

Derek Simpson, Unite Joint General Secretary, says: “Unite is pleased that the Prime Minister took the opportunity to meet with the Halifax workforce at its headquarters. This visit gave the staff an opportunity to raise their concerns in relation to the current turmoil across the financial services sector.

“The union has welcomed the bold and decisive action by this Government to address the financial crisis and shore up confidence in the markets. Without this action the impact on jobs would be disastrous across the finance sector.

“We took the opportunity to raise directly with the Prime Minister the Unite ‘Social Contract’ for the financial services sector. This outlines Unite’s priorities to secure jobs and make the industry more transparent and accountable now that the taxpayer has a significant stake. The union wants the Government and finance companies to remember the wider social impact of the financial crisis and do everything in their power to protect hard working families, their communities and to encourage confidence in the economy.”
