PCS: Workers in the dark over bank’s takeover

The Public and Commercial Services union reacted has angrily to the announcement that Banco Santander had agreed with the Alliance and Leicester (A&L) board to take over the bank.

PCS represents more than 750 workers at A&L and the news has come as a complete surprise to the union and its members.

PCS deputy general secretary Hugh Lanning said: “The news of the takeover may be welcomed by shareholders and the bank’s board but it is a shock to our members who now face a period of uncertainty.

“We have sought to maintain good industrial relations with A&L and its predecessor, National Girobank, for more than 40 years. The bank’s success is the result of a dedicated, hard working and skilled workforce and we are seeking a meeting as a matter of urgency to allay any fears in respect of job security.”
