Unlock Democracy welcomes Justice Committee’s criticisms of Constitutional Renewal Bill

Commenting on the publication of the Justice Select Committee’s report on the parts of the draft constitutional renewal bill dealing with the role of the Attorney General, Deputy Director of Unlock Democracy Alexandra Runswick said:

“We welcome this report. The draft constitutional renewal bill was not as far reaching as we hoped or the government’s rhetoric suggested it would be. In the case of the Attorney General it actually proposes to go backwards, giving the role even greater powers and fewer checks and balances.

“A year on since Gordon Brown launched his Governance of Britain programme of constitutional renewal, we have very little to show for the grand statements he made back then. It is however welcome that these proposals have been published in draft form and subjected to scrutiny. We hope that over the summer he will rediscover his passion for reform and return with a more revolutionary set of proposals than the ones we are currently stuck with.”
