CIOB: London South Bank University wins the 2008 Student Challenge
London South Bank University has won this year’s Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Student Challenge 2008.
This year’s challenge required the students to act as logistics consultants working to support a multi-million pound construction project in the UK. Part of the challenge was to overcome concerns from local residents who felt that the project would result in added noise, dust and increased transportation.
Competing against seven other teams, the students from London impressed the judges with their proposal, which covered the logistics methods to and from the site.
Michael Brown CIOB deputy chief executive said, “This year’s challenge produced some really innovative and insightful solutions. Construction is a complex industry and so the provision of good logistics is crucial to achieve a successful project. The challenge highlighted those implications, both in terms of how well transportation supports the construction industry and the wider environmental, social and economic considerations.”

· 3rd place University of Central Lancashire
· Highly Commended the Southampton Solent University
The Judging Panel included Canute Simpson and Adrian Blumenthal from Constructing Excellence, Adrian Boughtflower of Westfield and Dr Sarah Peace, CIOB research manager.
Other teams to reach the final included: Inverness College, City of Sunderland College, Leeds College of Building and the Coleg Sir Gar from Wales.
