RHA Scottish hauliers ‘lay it on the line’ at Holyrood

Today, 30th April, a delegation of 15 Scottish hauliers met with Scottish parliamentarians at Holyrood. The aim of the meeting was to highlight current concerns including the recent uncertainty over fuel supplies from the Grangemouth refinery and of course the continuing fuel price rises.

Represtantatives of the four main parties were in attendance. “By the time the meeting, which lasted over one and a half hours was over, they were left in absolutely no doubt that the plight of Scottish hauliers is now reaching a critical”, said RHA Director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Phil Flanders.

“Today’s meeting gave us the perfect opportunity to highlight the not only the current financial crisis and imminent downsizing of many companies, but also to make those present aware of how many operators have been already forced out of business. And for the majority of those who remain, in particular the smaller operators, the future looks at best, bleak”.

Following the meeting, Phil Flanders and Scotland and Northern Ireland Chairman, Don Barclay, met with Financial Cabinet Minister John Swinney and Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson.

“It is encouraging to know that at least Scottish ministers and Parliamentarians are aware of the seriousness of the current situation”, concluded Phil Flanders. “If we are to ensure that the UK haulage industry as a whole is to have any chance of survival then it is vital that Westminster also sits up, takes notice and most importantly, takes action”.
