Welsh Pensioners ‘missing out on entitlements’

Welsh Pensioners ‘missing out on entitlements’

Help the Aged and British Gas have teamed up to push the Government to ensure pensioners get their entitlement.

The move follows news that Welsh pensioners are missing out on nearly £50million in unclaimed Minimum Income Guarantee entitlements each year.

Government figures indicate that the national picture is similar, with pensioners missing out on an available £1billion of means tested benefits in both 2001 and 2002.

The utilities giant and the charity have produced a new leaflet for the elderly entitled ‘Can You Claim It’ to try to ensure Welsh pensioners better understand what they are entitled to and how they can collect.

While a perceived culture of targets are under attack in politics, British Gas and Help the Aged have called for a new one that would aim to get 90% of pensioners receiving their full entitlement within three years.

Although the Government has not committed to such an aim, the Welsh Executive has welcomed the campaign for helping to get information to pensioners.
