Government launches drug awareness campaign

The Government is launching a new campaign to combat the problem of drug abuse among young people.

£3million will be plugged into the campaign that will target information at parents and carers as well as teenagers, and reflects government concerns that more young people are taking drugs than ever.

People will be encouraged to ‘Talk to FRANK’ to find out impartial and accurate information on drugs by a series of television, radio and printed advertisements. The information will be available on www.talktofrank.com as well as through a helpline.

The campaign will try to use modern techniques to get young people to act on the drugs problem, suggesting that they anonymously text the helpline number to friends they feel have a problem.

Some campaigners say that the campaign, which focuses on heroin and cocaine, does not do enough to stop young people taking ‘soft drugs’ and will encourage them to become complacent about taking them.
