John Randall

Biography:

John has lived in Uxbridge all his life. He runs a local business and is a long-standing member of Uxbridge Conservative Association.

John was born in 1955 and educated at Rutland House School in Hillingdon and Merchant Taylors School in Hertfordshire. He graduated from the University of London in 1979 with an Upper Second degree in Serbo-Croat language and literature. He also speaks Russian and still takes a keen interest in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. John is married to Kate and has two sons and a daughter.

Since his earliest days, John has worked in Randalls of Uxbridge, the family’s shop for four generations. He started as a Saturday boy and worked his way through the business from porter to sales assistant to buyer. He became a Director in 1980 and Managing Director in 1988. He was also Tour leader for Birdquest and Limosa Holidays as specialist ornithologist from 1986 to 1997.

He was Chairman of the Uxbridge Retailers Association and a past chairman of the Cowley Residents’ Association. A keen sports spectator he is a season ticket holder at Saracens Rugby Club and Uxbridge Football Club as well as being a member of both Uxbridge and Middlesex Cricket Clubs. He is interested in local history and is a keen ornithologist. He also enjoys music and plays the piano.

John Randall’s Experience

John was elected Member of Parliament for Uxbridge in July 1997 after the tragic death of Sir Michael Shersby. Immediately following his election he was appointed to the Deregulation Select Committee. John has also been a member of the Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Select Committee and its Environment Sub-Committee.

He has been involved with the Conservative Party all his working life. In 1994, he became Honorary Treasurer of Uxbridge Conservative Association and later that year was elected Chairman of the Association. During the General Election campaign, he served as Sir Michael Shersby’s Election Agent.

John was appointed as an Opposition Whip in 1999. In December 2005, he became Opposition Assistant Chief Whip.

In Parliament, John has voted against Government plans to cut lone parent benefit, limit access to incapacity benefit, cut student funding and against the introduction of quotas in schools. He has also introduced an adjournment debate about police numbers.

John put forward the Marine Wildlife Conservation Bill. This was the first Private Members’ Bill of the 2001-02 Parliament, and it aimed to extend the protection already given to non-marine wildlife. Sadly the Bill was defeated in the House of Lords, despite having widespread support.
