Bercow and Tebbit form unlikely alliance
Tory right-winger Lord Tebbit has teamed up with party moderniser John Bercow to produce a pamphlet in which they outline issues on which they agree.
The leaflet, entitled Common Ground, is a move away from the 2002 animosity between the two politicians.
In that year, Mr Bercow resigned from the shadow cabinet over gay adoption, while Lord Tebbit led a savage public attack on the Buckingham MP, going so far as to boycott his wedding in protest.
Published tomorrow, the latest move by frontbencher Mr Bercow and Commons veteran Lord Tebbit is unlikely to help Conservative leader Michael Howard’s efforts to improve the party’s image and promote a more caring side of Tory politics.
“Strange though it may seem, a massive amount actually unites John and Norman,” a friend told The Telegraph.
“They now get on pretty well. Indeed, in one discussion they had – which is transcribed in the pamphlet – Norman even suggests they should do a roadshow together.”
