An age of uncertainty

An age of uncertainty

Young people in the UK face an uncertain future.

A new report looked at the views of 1,500 16-21 year olds in the UK, and found that a third of them were not confident about finding a job.

With 56% saying they were unable to get the experience they needed to land the job they want.

The research found that a lack of connections, a decline in school-secured work experience, low self-confidence and an apparent lack of visibility of local employers, were all impacting young people’s work prospects.

31% of those asked didn't think they could find suitable work in their local area and 35% knew little about their local job market.

Despite their concerns many still have dreams of success, with 40% aspiring to become a boss of a company and 63% wishing to manage a team.

But they often lack the skills needed to reach their goals.

Only 25% felt they are very good at communicating what they think, and just 15% thought they are very good at speaking to a group.

The report makes four key recommendations including a new school-to-work syllabus in schools, and the development of management and leadership skills from a younger age.
