Tinkering around the edges will not create flood free homes

Tinkering around the edges will not create flood free homes

Tinkering around the edges will not create flood free homes

The Flood Free Homes campaign, launched by the Association of British Insurers and supported by Friends of the Earth, National Flood Forum, Know Your Flood Risk, The BRE Centre for Resilience and the Property Care Association’s Flood Protection Group, is calling for no home to be at high risk of flooding by 2025.

The campaign is calling for the UK to:

Invest: By 2025 £1bn per year to be spent on managing flood risk to keep pace with climate change.

Adapt: A zero tolerance of inappropriate new developments in areas at risk of flooding.

Plan: Cross party consensus on ambitious long term solutions that manage all types of flood risk.

It’s the greatest natural threat we face. And it’s all around us.

Nearly four and a half million homes in England and Wales are at risk from flooding.

Flooding has been a fact of life for centuries.

But due to climate change, increased building and greater population density the threat is growing.

Within the next two decades there is a 10% chance of a flood event happening in England so catastrophic that it causes in excess of £10 billion in damage.

Without action to reduce this risk, across the UK, the effect on our homes, businesses, communities, infrastructure and way of life is potentially devastating.
We must stop tinkering around the edges.

Long term ambitious solutions are required for the building of more flood defences and their maintenance and for the planning of future developments.

How?

Well-maintained flood defences are the best way to protect communities from flooding and keep pace with the threat from climate change. In order to adequately address the rising risk of flooding, current and future UK governments must significantly increase funding to £1bn per year by 2025 to build new and properly maintain existing flood defences.

Each year, 20,000 new properties are built on flood risk areas, including 4,000 in areas of significant flood risk. This is simply storing up problems for the future. We must end inappropriate developments in flood risk areas.

In the longer term, governments must consider more aspects than ever before,
coordinating national and local strategies to deal with all aspects of flood risk management.  Flood risk should be managed within an overall strategy of managing land and water. We want cross-party consensus on managing all types of flood risk.

We want all homes to be free of high flood risk by 2025. Invest. Adapt. Plan.
