Shouldn’t people be treated fairly, wherever they live?
And shouldn’t companies play fair, wherever they do business?
Some UK companies are taking advantage of people living in poverty in developing countries.
Take Cecilia for example. She made a living collecting shellfish from the river in southern Nigeria.
Crude oil spilled from a pipeline owned by a UK company.
Overnight, the shellfish all died. The company still hasn’t cleared the pollution.
Or Jitu. His wife worked in a factory in Bangladesh making clothes for the UK high street.
The factory collapsed. He’s never seen her since. Now he’s bringing up their children alone.
If it happened here there would be an outcry.
Companies would be taken to court and the victims would get compensation.
But Cecilia and Jitu have been denied justice. Just because of where they live.
Imagine it was you. Or your family.
UK companies are getting away with things in developing countries which wouldn’t be tolerated here.
They need to be held to account. And people like Cecilia and Jitu need justice.
