Tony Lloyd

Biography:

Tony Lloyd was re-elected MP for Manchester Central in May 2010 with a majority of 10,439. He served as an MP until October 2012, when he stepped down to contest the 2012 Police and Crime Commissioner elections in the Greater Manchester Police area.

Tony Lloyd has been a Member of Parliament since 1983. He represented the Stretford constituency until 1997 and following boundary changes has been Member of Parliament for Manchester Central since then. He was born in Manchester and has lived here for most of his life.

Tony is Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party. In this role he chairs meetings of the PLP which consists of all Labour MP’s, both government and backbench MP’s. He chairs the Parliamentary Committee where the Prime Minister and senior government ministers meet with elected represenatives of backbench MP’s.

Tony is the Chair of the Trade Union Group of Labour MPs. The purpose of the Group is to liaise between the Trade Unions and the government, especially Trade Unions affiliated to the Labour Party (see TULO and the Trades Union Congress).

He was a visiting Parliamentary Fellow of St Anthony’s College, Oxford in 2005 and 2006.

Tony is a member of several All Party Groups in Parliament, and Chairs the All Party Group on Venezuela.

Tony is the leader of the British Delegation to the OSCE. The OSCE was established in and currently has 55 member States from Europe, Central Asia and North America. It deals with a wide-range of security related issues such as democratisation, election monitoring, human rights, arms control, economic and environmental security and security building.

Tony was the leader of the British Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and one of its vice-Presidents. The Council of Europe was set up to defend human rights, parliamentary democracy and the rule of law.

Tony was also the leader of the British Delegation to the Western European Union. Its purpose is a Parliamentary scrutiny body with respect to European security and defence.

Before entering Parliament:
Tony studied at Nottingham University and Manchester Business School, gaining qualifications in Maths and Business.
He was a lecturer in the Department of Business at Salford University.
He was a councillor on Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council from 1979-84 and was deputy leader of the Labour group.
