Thangam Debbonaire

Biography:

Thangam Debbonaire was elected MP for Bristol West on May 7th 2015 with 22900 votes, taking 35.7% of the vote.

Thangam moved to St Werburghs, Bristol, in 1991 to work as a National Children’s Officer for the Women’s Aid Federation of England, position she held until 1998. Her commitment to the cause of domestic violence prevention and gender equality continued throughout the years: before becoming an MP, she worked daily on the territory to raise awareness, co-authored two books and a number of papers about domestic violence and became trustee of the University of Bristol Students’ Union. Between 2006 and 2008 she worked as National Research Manager for Respect, an anti-domestic violence organisation.

Thangam, born in 1966, studied contemporarily cello at the Royal College of Music and Mathematics at the University of Oxford, before gaining an M.Sc in Management, Development and Social Responsibility at the University of Bristol.
