Stephen McCabe

Biography:

Stephen McCabe was re-elected MP for Birmingham, Selly Oak on May 7th 2015 with 21584 votes, taking 47.7% of the vote.

Steve was born in Port Glasgow, a great shipbuilding town on the River Clyde in Scotland. From studying Social Work in Scotland and Bradford in the 1970s and 1980s, Steve worked with young offenders, in child protection, and lecturing in social work at North East Worcestershire College in the late 1980s.

After working in Social Services in the area for three years, in 1990 Steve was elected to Birmingham City Council. He was soon made chairman of the transport committee and won an award in 1994 for his committee’s new approach to transport management. He secured the first registration of an urban “village green”.

Steve has been Member of Parliament for Birmingham Hall Green since the 1997 election, when he won with a majority of 8,420. The defeat of the Tories in 1997 marked a turning point for the country and for Hall Green itself, where the benefits of the last nine years can be seen. This success has continued in 2001 and 2005 when Steve was returned with a majority of over 5,000.

From his background in social work, Steve maintains his work and interest in community care and children’s issues. Other political interests include tackling anti-social behaviour, security issues, transport and the economy. A large part of Steve’s parliamentary time is spent on raising local issues, including crime and regeneration, with his Labour colleagues and ministers.

In his spare time, Steve enjoys reading, football and is also a member of his local cricket club.
