Sir George Young

Biography:

Sir George Young was re-elected MP for North West Hampshire in May 2010 with a majority of 18,583 votes.

Sir George and his wife Aurelia live in the North West Hampshire constituency at Penton Mewsey, near Andover. They enjoy cycling round the lanes near their home on their tandem, and are frequently seen at local events across North West Hampshire.

Born in 1941, Sir George was educated at Eton; Christ Church, Oxford; and the University of Surrey. He worked with the National Economic Development Council from 1966 to 1967 and then spent two years as a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey. From 1969 to 1974, he was Economic Adviser to the Post Office Corporation.

Sir George and Aurelia have four children and four grandchildren.

Sir George was a councillor on the London Borough of Lambeth from 1968 to 1971, and a GLC member for the London Borough of Ealing between 1970 and 1973.

In February 1974, Sir George was elected MP for Ealing Acton. Following the abolition of the Ealing Acton Constituency by the Boundary Commission in 1997, Sir George was elected MP for North West Hampshire. He was re-elected in 2001 with an increased majority.

Following his election to Parliament, he was an Opposition Whip between 1976 and 1979 and a Junior Health Minister from 1979 to 1981. He was a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Environment Department between 1981 and 1986 and was appointed to the Whips` Office in July 1990.

From November 1990, he was Minister of State at the Environment Department until his appointment as Financial Secretary to the Treasury in July 1994. He was appointed a Privy Counsellor in the June 1993 Birthday Honours.

Sir George was made Transport Secretary in July 1995 and retained the position until the General Election in May 1997 after which he was Shadow Transport Secretary until June that year.

Sir George was appointed Shadow Leader of the House and Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in June 1998. He had been Shadow Defence Secretary since the previous June. He resigned from the Shadow Cabinet in September 2000 to allow his name to go forward as a candidate for Speaker. In the new parliament following the General Election of 2001, he was elected Chairman of the Select Committee on Standards and Privileges, and served on the Liaison Committee, cross-examining the Prime Minister twice a year.
