Sammy Wilson

Biography:

Sammy Wilson was re-elected MP for East Antrim on May 7th 2015 with 12103 votes, taking 36.1% of the vote.

Sammy Wilson was born in Belfast in April 1953 and was educated at Methodist College Belfast. After studying Economics and Politics at Queens University Belfast, he attended Stranmillis Teaching College and subsequently taught at Grosvenor Grammar School. He would then become Head of Economics there and Assistant Chief Examiner for A-Level Economics in Northern Ireland.

Sammy Wilson has held public office since 1981, when he was first elected to Belfast City Council. He has topped the poll in Pottinger in every election since and was twice Lord Mayor of Belfast, in 1986/87 and 2000/01.

In 1998 he was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly for the East Belfast constituency, and was returned to the Assembly in 2003 and 2007 for East Antrim, and in 2005 was elected to serve as MP for the same constituency.

After the restoration of devolution in 2007, Mr Wilson was appointed by his party leader to serve as the Chairman of the Education Committee.

Outside of politics, Sammy can be found either riding his motorbike in East Antrim or working in his garden.
