Peter Soulsby

Biography:

Resigned as MP in March 2011 to contest position of Mayor of Leicester.

Peter Soulsby was re-elected MP for Leicester South in May 2010 with a majority of 8,808.

Peter has lived in Leicester South for over 30 years. During this time he served on Leicester Council – 17 years as Council leader. He spearheaded City Challenge, bringing over £400m of jobs and regeneration to Leicester – including the land for the Walkers Stadium.

He was knighted by the Queen in 1999 for services to the City of Leicester.

He was born in Bishop Auckland on December 27 1948 and educated at the City of Leicester College and Leicester University.

He served on Leicester City Council between 1973-2003

He was formerly Head of Regions for the British Lung Foundation and Deputy Chair of British Waterways. He is interested in inland waterways restoration and use.

He first contested Harborough at the 1979 general election, followed by Leicester South in a 2004 by election

He was elected member for Leicester South May 5 2005 general election

Peter is married to Alison and they have three children, Cassandra, Eleanor and Lauren and three grandchildren. Florence, a sister for Robert, was born on May 6.
