Nicola Blackwood

Biography:

Nicola Blackwood was elected as Conservative MP for Oxford West & Abingdon on May 7th 2015 with 26153 votes, taking 45.7% of the vote.

Nicola was born in 1979 in Johannesburg Nicola now lives in Summertown, is a Governor at her local special school and has just been trained as a Domestic Violence Champion.

In 2010 she was choosen as a member of the Home Affairs and of the Joint Committee on Draft Enhanced Terrorism Prevention, and in 2012 of the Investigation Measures Bill 2012 committee.

Nicola was trained as a classical singer at Trinity College of Music from the age of 14 (and home schooled for her GCSE’s and A-Levels in Oxford) before gaining a First in Music at St Anne’s College and an M.Phil. in Musicology from Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

Although Nicola didn’t get involved in student politics, she spent part of a gap year volunteering with aid projects in the Middle East which led to a role advising the Conservative International Development team – and since then she has volunteered with aid projects in Mozambique, Rwanda, Bangladesh. In 2013, though, she voted against the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill after intimating to students that she would support the measure, for which she was criticised by Oxford University Student Union

Nicola is also on the Council of Advisors for ZANE, a charity which seeks to support pensioners in Zimbabwe.

In addition to her Human Rights work, Nicola was one of the original team which set up the Conservative Party Social Action Project.
