Jonathan Ashworth

Biography:

Jonathan Ashworth was re-elected MP for Leicester South on May 7th 2015 with 27473 votes, taking 59.8% of the vote.

Jonathan was first elected MP in a by-election on May 5th 2011 after the resignation of his predecessor Peter Soulsby; his name was backed by the major trade unions, such as Unite, GMB and UNISON. In 2004 he worked alongside the Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown when he was appointed as Special Adviser to Chief Secretaries to the Treasury Paul Boateng, Des Browne and Stephen Timms. When the Labour Party left government in 2010, Jonathan became Political Secretary to Harriet Harman and, although he never publicly cheered at any candidate, he is said to have played a key role amongst those who supported Ed Miliband’s leadership. After becoming leader of the party, Ed Miliband nominated Jonathan Head of Party Relations.

Born in 1978, Jonathan is married with Emilie Oldknow, the East Midlands Regional Director for the Labour Party who ran as candidate for Sherwood in the 2010 election.
