John Stanley

Biography:

Sir John Stanley was re-elected MP for Tonbridge and Malling in May 2010 with a majority of 18,178 votes.

John was born in 1942. He won a Trevelyan Scholarship to Lincoln College, Oxford, where he read Modern History. He later studied at Syracuse University, USA. He is married with two children. In 1984 John was made a Privy Counsellor, and in 1988 he was knighted.

Before his election to Parliament he was a senior Financial Executive with Rio Tinto Zinc. He was formerly a Research Associate of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and has also been a member of the Conservative Party`s Research Department with responsibility for Housing.

While at the Institute for Strategic Studies, he undertook a major study of Western European defence industries and is the joint author of “The International Trade in Arms” (1971). He has had two pamphlets published by the Conservative Political Centre: “American Troops in Europe an anachronism or a necessity?” (1972); and a “Shared Purchase” (1974), which proposed a scheme to facilitate home ownership.

John stood for Newton in 1970 and has been Member of Parliament for Tonbridge and Malling since 1974. In March that year he was appointed a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on nationalised industries. He was Secretary of the Conservative Parliamentary Committee for Industry and Secretary of the Conservative Parliamentary Committee for Trade. From 1976 to 1979 he was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Margaret Thatcher, then leader of the Opposition.

In 1979 he was appointed Minister of State for Housing and Construction, and in 1983 he was made Minister of State for the Armed Forces. Following the General Election of 1987 he was appointed Minister of State for Northern Ireland.

John is a Member of the House of Commons Select Committee for Foreign Affairs. He is also Chairman of the Britain-Republic of Korea Parliamentary Group; Chairman of the Britain-Nepal Parliamentary Group; a Vice-Chairman of the Britain-Japan Parliamentary Group; and a Vice-Chairman of the Parliamentary Group on Child Abduction.
