James Duddridge

Biography:

James Duddridge was re-elected MP for Rochford and Southend East on May 7th 2015 with 20241 votes, taking 46.4% of the vote.

James Duddridge was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Rochford & Southend East in May 2005, and lives in Southend with his wife Katy and their two sons Tom and Henry.

Born in Bristol and educated in Somerset, James graduated from the University of Essex with a degree in Government in 1993.

After leaving university, James joined Barclays Bank, and worked for the company in Swaziland and the Ivory Coast where he became national sales manager in 1998. He ended up running the bank’s operations in Botswana, managing 750 staff.

By the time he left the bank in 2002, he had helped to set up the market and opinion research company YouGov, which now has a multi-million pound turnover and contracts with The Telegraph and Sky.

Before becoming an MP, James fought the South Yorkshire Labour stronghold of Rother Valley in 2001, achieving a 5% swing in his favour. He was elected in 2005 with a majority of 5,494, gaining 45.3% of the total vote.

During his time in Parliament James has served on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee and the International Development Select Committee, as well as several legislative committees including the Corporate Manslaughter Bill and Pensions Bill. His policy interests include the environment, pensions, financial services and Africa.

He was appointed Opposition Whip for Work and Pensions and the Cabinet Office in January 2008 and was promoted to Opposition Whip for the Treasury in December 2008.

In his spare time, James enjoys spending time with his wife Katy and young sons. He takes a keen interest in sport, especially football, supporting his local team Southend United. He also enjoys running, cycling, DIY and real ale, although not always in that order!
