Hugo Swire

Biography:

Hugo Swire was re-elected MP for East Devon on May 7th 2015 with 25401 votes, taking 46.4% of the vote.

Hugo was elected MP for East Devon in 2001. He was educated at Eton and attended St. Andrew’s University and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst.

Before entering Parliament he served in the Armed Forces, worked in independent television and was the first Head of Development at the National Gallery. Latterly he was a Director of Sotheby’s, London. Hugo is also one of the country’s leading charity auctioneers and has been involved in raising millions of pounds for different charities over the years.

In 2003 Hugo was appointed Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to Rt Hon Theresa May MP then Chairman of the Conservative Party. Later in the same year he was made an opposition whip. In 2004 he was Shadow Minister for the Arts, and was Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport from 2005 to 2007. After the 2010 general election he became minister of state in Northern Ireland, a role he retained until September 2012, when he was appointed Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs.

Hugo has also served on the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee. He was appointed to the Speakers Advisory Committee on Works of Art becoming Chairman in 2001.

Despite his front bench responsibilities Hugo retains his interest in foreign affairs and is the Secretary of the Conservative Middle East Council. He is also Treasurer of the All Party Oman Group and Vice Chairman of the All Party United Arab Emirates Group and All-Party Lebanon Group.

He is President of the Western Area Conservative Clubs Council, the National Society of Conservative and Unionist Agents (Western Branch) and Exmouth Conservative Club. In addition he is Vice-President, Grenadier Guards Association (Wessex Branch), Axminster Young Farmers Club, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Member of the Countryside Alliance, the National Farmers Union and the Royal British Legion.

Hugo is married to Sasha, has two daughters and lives in East Devon and London.
