Gary Streeter

Biography:

Gary Streeter was re-elected MP for South West Devon on May 7th 2015 with 28500 votes, taking 56.6% of the vote.

He was born in 1955. He was raised on a dairy farm in East Devon. He was educated at Tiverton Grammar School in Devon and the University of London, King’s College where he obtained a First Class Honours degree in Law in 1977. He also won the Gelf Award for top law student for that year.

He is married to Janet and has a married daughter (Tamsin) and son (Gareth), and two grandchildren.

Mr Streeter was articled to a large City of London firm of solicitors until 1980 when on qualifying as a solicitor he joined Foot & Bowden in Plymouth. He specialised in Company and Employment law and became a partner at Foot & Bowden in 1984.

He was elected as a Councillor on the Plymouth City Council in 1986, winning a by-election by 21 votes. He was the Housing Chairman from 1989 to 1991, overseeing the largest capital and revenue budgets on the Plymouth City Council.

Mr Streeter was selected to fight Plymouth Sutton on 10 March 1992 and won the seat on 9 April 1992, taking the majority from just over 4,000 to 11,950.

He was a member of the Environment Select Committee from July 1992 until February 1993 when he became the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Solicitor-General. In July 1994 he was made Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Attorney-General until July 1995. From July 1995 to June 1996 Mr Streeter was appointed a Government Minister in the Whips Office. In June 1996 he was appointed a Junior Minister in the Lord Chancellor’s Department.

Mr Streeter won the newly formed constituency of South West Devon by a majority of 7,500 on 1 May 1997. As well as Shadow Lord Chancellor’s Department spokesman, he became the Parliamentary Private Secretary to John Major, the Leader of the Opposition, in May 1997. From June 1997 to June 1998, Mr Streeter was appointed Shadow Minister for Europe on the Opposition frontbench. From June 1998 – September 2001 he was Shadow Secretary of State for International Development.

In June 2001 he held the seat of South West Devon with a majority of 7,144 with an increased share of the vote. From September 2001 to September 2002 he was a Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party.

After the appointment of Michael Howard as party leader in November 2003 Gary was appointed as a shadow minister for International Affairs on the opposition front bench.

At the 2005 General Election Gary increased his majority to 10,141 returning to the backbenches during spring 2005. From September 2005 to March 2007 he chaired the Conservative Human Rights Commission. From 2005 he was also appointed Chairman of the Conservative Party’s International Office. Gary resigned this position in March 2008 to enable him to focus his attention on a range of issues from the backbenches.
