Fabian Hamilton

Biography:

Fabian Hamilton was re-elected MP for Leeds North East on May 7th 2015 with 23137 votes, taking 47.9% of the vote.

Fabian Hamilton has been the Labour MP for Leeds North East since 1997. For nearly twelve years he has served the communities and many neighbourhoods which make up this most multi-cultural of constituencies.

Married to Rosy for 28 years, fifty-three year old Fabian has three children: Ella, 24, Ruth, 21 and Lawrence, 15. Before his election, Fabian served for ten years as a Labour Member of Leeds City Council and chaired the Education Committee during the year before his election to Parliament.

After winning the seat for a second time at the 2001 General Election, Fabian was appointed to the influential House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee. He was reappointed in 2005 following his election for a third Parliamentary term on May 5th that year. Educated at Brentwood School and York University, his interests include cycling, photography, Apple Computers and music.

Having lived in Leeds for almost 30 years, Fabian has been involved in many local, national and international campaigns, including opposition to telecom masts, encouraging appropriate local development, helping families obtain visas for their relatives and supporting refugees trying to escape persecution. He has supported Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and the TIDAL Trade Justice campaign as well as Make Poverty History.

He has also started an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Prison Health, which he now chairs and was elected Chairman of the influential All-Party Parliamentary Hospice and Palliative Care Group which meets regularly in the House of Commons together with Hospice representatives from all over the UK. Fabian is also Secretary of the All Party Motor Group and Chairman of the Anglo-French Parliamentary Group and Education Group. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of Labour Friends of Israel and the Vice-Chairman of the All-Party Iran Group.

He has fought against drug dealing and prostitution by working with the police and community locally and by working on new legislation in Parliament. He has fought for local schools to get new buildings and has supported teaching staff and parents. He was delighted when the new Carr Manor High School was opened by the Prime Minister, Tony Blair, on 15th March 2007 followed by the new Allerton High School being opened by Prime Minister Gordon Brown on 28th November 2008. The new Allerton Grange High School will open next year, 2009.

He has worked for the environment by supporting recycling schemes and becoming very involved in alternative fuel technologies. Fabian is a Governor of the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and a supporter of St Gemma’s Hospice. In 2003 he cycled from Harewood House to Westminster to raise funds for Heart Research UK, the charity of which he is also a Trustee.
