Chinyelu Onwurah

Biography:

Chinyelu Onwurah was elected as Labour MP for Newcastle Upon Tyne Central on May 7th 2015 with 19301 votes, taking 55.0% of the vote.

Chi was born in Wallsend, grew up in Kenton and went to Kenton School before studying Electrical Engineering in London.

She went to Kenton School, and had a career in engineering since she graduated from Imperial College in 1987.

She worked in hardware and software development, product management, market development and strategy for a variety of manly private sector companies in a number of different countries.

During this time she also studied for an MBA from Manchester Business School and gained Chartered Engineering status.

As an engineer she specialised in building out infrastructure in new markets and standardising wholesale Ethernet access.

She was very active in the Anti Apartheid Movement, and spent many years on its National Executive, and that of its successor organisation, ACTSA.

In 2010 she joined the Advisory Board of the Open University Business School, and in 2013 she was given the role as a Shadow Minister in the Cabinet Office by Ed Miliband.
