Alasdair McDonnell

Biography:

Alasdair McDonnell was re-elected MP for Belfast South on May 7th 2015 with 9560 votes, taking 24.5% of the vote.

Alasdair is the current leader of the SDLP, a role he has been covering since November 2011, and has been elected MP for Belfast South for the first time in May 2005 and confirmed in 2010. Between 1977 and 2001 Alasdair was a member of Belfast City Council, and between 1995 and 1996 he covered the role of deputy Mayor. Moreover, he has been a member of the N.I. Assembly since 1998.

Born in Cushendall, County Antrim, in 1949, Alasdair studied at St. McNissi’s College, Garron Tower. After his graduation at University College in Dublin, he began practising as a family doctor at the Inner City Group Practice at Ormeau Health Centre in 1979.
