Data hub powers transport innovation

Innovators in transportation will be better able to solve the pressing challenges facing the sector following the launch of a comprehensive new data facility by the Transport Systems Catapult.

The Intelligent Mobility Data Hub, announced yesterday, stores a range of valuable data sets from Government organisations and transport and technology businesses.

It is intended to provide a platform for these organisations to work with smaller firms and the data to invent solutions to issues such as congestion, pollution and journey planning.

Data currently stored on the platform offers insights into, for example, traffic and haulage movements, emissions patterns and the impacts of roadworks.

“Data is the key which unlocks the door to transport innovation, but too often transport data is locked within commercial and technical silos, inhibiting collaboration and innovation,” commented the Transport Systems Catapult new chief executive Paul Campion.

“Using the Catapult’s position as a neutral trusted broker, the new Intelligent Mobility Data Hub allows the UK transport industry to take a major step toward resolving this issue by enabling the analysis and combining of large data sets in a secure platform.

He added: “This facility will allow UK companies to grow by offering new services to travellers, unlocking the door to innovations which were not possible before.”

Partners using the facility will also have access to powerful IT infrastructure for data analysis and a team of specialists from the Transport Systems Catapult to help them. It features secure storage and robust legal processes to ensure privacy and commercial confidentiality.
