BASC has sponsored two young scientist awards at an international conference.
The awards were presented at this year's joint International Union of Game Biologists (IUGB) and Perdix congress (iugb2017.com) in France for the best talks and posters presented by young scientists within three years of graduation. BASC co-sponsored the awards with Tour du Valat, a renowned Mediterranean wetland research organization.
The IUGB is a scientific conference focused on the biology, ecology and human dimensions of game species and hunters. The 33rd congress, organized by the ONCFS (Office national de la chasse et de la faune sauvage) was themed “Wildlife under human influence: What can we do?”.
Dr Matt Ellis, BASC's scientific advisor, said: "We were delighted to be able to sponsor the young scientist awards and recognise the talent and enthusiasm in the next generation of wildlife biologists. The quality of entries were fantastic. Well done to everyone who entered."
Nirmala Seon-Massin, president of the IUGB Congress and director of research at ONCFS, said: “IUGB has always strived to bring together science, management and policy-makers. The support and active participation of stakeholders such as BASC is instrumental in reaching our goals”.
The winners of each category won cash and the runners-up received a number of textbooks.
Dr Ellis added: "The IUGB is a great event for bringing together the leading organisations in wildlife biology and conservation. We forged new and strengthened existing relationships with key international partners on a range of topics including sarcocystis, white fronted geese, pochard and lead ammunition."
