Concrete and steel barriers have been placed on several bridges in central London to separate vehicles from pedestrians in the wake of Saturday’s horrific terrorist incident on London Bridge and at Borough Market. Barriers have been installed on London Bridge as well as on Westminster, Lambeth and Waterloo bridges.
The Metropolitan Police says that security has been reviewed on London’s 33 bridges and the use of barriers and other measures are being considered at other locations across the capital. The barriers, they say, are intended to increase security and are designed specifically for hostile vehicle mitigation.
Westminster City Council leader Nickie Aiken described the installation on its bridge as a “sensible and proportionate” measure and said the council is working closely with the Metropolitan Police and security services. She added that the kind of security now in place on Westminster bridge “needs to be part of a permanent solution”.
Lambeth Council leader Lib Peck added: “We are working closely with the Metropolitan Police and support all moves to ensure the appropriate security is in place to keep London’s residents and visitors safe.”
