"Professor Lyons explores what the future may hold for transportation given a series of uncertainties"

CIHT futures report is published

Professor Glenn Lyons has completed his comprehensive report as part of the CIHT FUTURES initiative, looking at uncertainty and the way forward for transport.

The 52 page report, published yesterday, features 10 recommendations for the Institution, transport professionals and strategic bodies. It draws upon insights gathered by engaging with industry representatives at 11 workshops over the last year.

Professor Lyons explores what the future may hold for transportation given a series of uncertainties such as falling world oil prices, extreme weather events and global security. He also explores the possible future impacts associated with a growing use of digital technology and a slowdown in the growth of car travel.

An interview with Professor Lyons is available here as a podcast.

Among the report’s recommendations are that key organisations in the transport sector join forces to establish a leadership development programme that focuses on ‘changing practices for changing times’.

The report also urges the Transport Select Committee to consider the need for an inquiry into processes that inform and influence transport policy and investment in the face of deep uncertainty about the future.

Recommendations for CIHT include producing an information pack for its members based on the FUTURES workshop material to help others to explore the concept of uncertainty.
