The Grey fleet is a commonly-used term to describe the use of an employee’s own vehicle for business purposes. In return for using their own car, employees are reimbursed on a pence per mile basis.
The latest research suggests that UK employees travel more than 12bn miles in grey fleet vehicles each year at a cost of around £5.5bn.
Road transport is an essential part of doing business, but the scale of grey fleet use in the UK has a serious impact on society. These vehicles emit over 3.5 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere each year and cost around £2.7bn through road-related work accidents.
In most cases, there is a cheaper, more sustainable and safer alternative to making a grey fleet journey.
