Urgent action needed to address child poverty
The impact of poverty on children’s education is profound, the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, told delegates today at the TUC Congress in Brighton.
Chris Keates, NASUWT General Secretary, said:
“The fact that the UK has over 3.7 million children living in poverty is scandalous.
“It is a shameful indictment of the economic and social policies of the last five years that many of them are within working families.
“Yet rather than address this the Government continues its cuts to tax credits and welfare which will exacerbate rather than alleviate the problem.
“In the 21st Century, poverty should not be blighting the life chances of children.”
Speaking to the Education and Poverty motion NASUWT National Executive Member, Neil Butler, said:
“The NASUWT believes that urgent action is needed to address the issue of child poverty in the UK.
“The impact of poverty on the education and life chances of children should not be underestimated.
“Unless effective action is taken to tackle poverty, children will continue to be denied their human rights, including the right to quality education.
“The Government needs to do more to ensure no child is denied quality education on the grounds of their parents’ ability to pay.”
