Funding crisis in school sixth forms

The NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK today warned at the TUC Congress in Brighton that many sixth form colleges were facing a financial crisis because of Government funding cuts.

In a debate on the education funding crisis, the NASUWT said the much of the sector was in a “parlous financial state”.

NASUWT General Secretary Chris Keates said:

“One of the most disgraceful aspects of the attacks on education by this Government is the attack on Sixth Form College funding.

“Sixth Form Colleges have experienced deeper cuts to their budgets than any other education institutions.

“These cuts, combined with increasing costs and on-going funding inequalities have left many Sixth Form Colleges in a parlous financial state.

“The cuts to this important area of education are an attack on the educational opportunities, future and life chances of young people across the country.”

Speaking in the debate NASUWT National Executive Member Alan Hackett said:

“Sixth Form Colleges have proved over many years that they can deliver an outstanding all round education for students whilst offering exceptional value for money but the sector has reached the point where it cannot absorb any further funding reductions.

“They provide vital educational opportunities for many thousands of young people, often where no other provision is available.  Funding cuts and the inevitable reduction of course provision in colleges will mean the loss of life-changing opportunities for students.”
