Dan Jarvis opens new Apprentice Training Centre at Mr Kipling bakery in Barnsley

Premier Foods today opened a new engineering training centre for apprentices at its Mr Kipling bakery in Fish Dam Lane, Barnsley. The opening was attended by the Company’s CEO, Gavin Darby and Dan Jarvis, the Labour Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Barnsley Central and constituency MP for the past 4 years.

The engineering training centre, a former machine workshop, is fitted with practice gear boxes, conveyor belts and other small scale food production equipment, providing a safe environment for the factory’s six apprentices to learn how to fix various sections of a production line. The centre will also be used to upskill line operators so they can acquire the relevant maintenance skills needed to spot and resolve defects that may occur on their production line.

The opening of the centre follows Premier Foods’ announcement in March that it will extend its 2014/2015 commitment to double the intake of apprentices for a further two years. The Company took on 10 new apprentices in 2014, more than doubling its intake compared to the previous year, and will take on similar numbers in 2015 and 2016, increasing the total number of new apprenticeships to around 30 by 2016.

Premier Foods, CEO Gavin Darby comments: “This centre is one of a number of initiatives we’ve invested in to develop the skills of our people. Apprenticeships are the best way to develop the engineering skills we need as they enable people to learn on the job as well as studying for a valuable qualification.”

Commenting on the visit Dan Jarvis said: “I’m delighted that Premier Foods is supporting the development of skills for young people. Their commitment to increase the number of apprentices ensures that our young people have a genuine route into employment, equipping them with proper training and skills gained from real life experience.”
