100 days to the vote for education

The NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, has marked 100 days to the General Election with the distribution of materials aimed at teachers, parents and the public emphasising the entitlements that our public education service should deliver for all children and young people.

The NASUWT’s ‘The Promise’ booklet sets out what is required by government to ensure that all children and young people have access to high quality education provision.

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:

“The General Election will be a key defining moment for education and all our great public services and for the country.

“In the 100 days to the General Election, the NASUWT will be reminding teachers, parents and the public of the impact of the Coalition Government’s policies on children and young people and on ordinary working people and their families.

“3.7million children in the UK are living in poverty. Thousands are homeless. Important rights and entitlements have been removed such as the entitlement to be taught by a qualified teacher, the entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum and the entitlement to access educational experiences which promote opportunity and achievement and are not based on their parents’ ability to pay.

“Teachers and others who are delivering vital public services have seen their pay cut, pensions plundered, jobs lost and professional status and competence denigrated. A few warm words from government ministers with an eye on the General Election will not compensate for the years of relentless assault on the profession.

“All who believe in social justice, in equality and in democracy and are concerned about the future of our children and young people will recognise the need for a change of political direction after the 2015 General Election.”
