NASUWT issues workload challenge to the secretary of state

Following the launch by the Secretary of State for Education Nicky Morgan of a workload challenge for teachers, the NASUWT the largest teachers’ union in the UK, has written to the Secretary of State responding to the challenge and detailing immediate steps she can take to alleviate the burdens on teachers.

Chris Keates NASUWT General Secretary said:

“Teachers’ working lives are blighted by excessive workload and long working hours.

“The Coalition has a wealth of evidence, including data collected by the Department for Education, which demonstrates this.

“The workload challenge has raised teachers’ expectations that action will now be taken.

“The NASUWT has provided ten practical things the Secretary of State can do now which will begin to make a difference.

“However, sustained change to the unacceptable workload burdens can only be brought about by an acceptance that one of the key drivers of excessive workload is government policy.  Regrettably the Secretary of State has ruled out any change in policy direction.”
