NASUWT comments on the outcome of the Ann Maguire murder trial

Commenting on the outcome of the trial of the murderer of teacher Ann Maguire, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“Thankfully Ann’s family have been spared the anguish of a lengthy trial but nevertheless this will have been a tremendous ordeal for them and our thoughts are with them all.

“Nothing, not even today’s sentencing, can alter the devastating, lasting impact Ann’s death has had on her family, friends and the school community in which she taught.

“Fortunately such terrible events are extremely rare in our schools but they nevertheless underline the importance of ensuring that all possible steps are taken to seek to safeguard the safety of staff and pupils, including rigorous monitoring and risk assessment of pupils whose behaviour gives cause for concern.”
