NASUWT comments on new guidance by Ofsted
Commenting on the publication of new guidance by Ofsted – ‘Ofsted inspections – clarification for schools’, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:
“The publication by Ofsted of clarification for schools is a welcome development which will help to empower teachers to challenge unnecessary and unproductive practices in schools which do not contribute to securing effective teaching and learning.
“However, there is much more work that needs to be done to bring significant downward pressure on excessive workloads and working hours of teachers which are proving to be detrimental to the provision of high quality teaching and learning in schools.
“The NASUWT has made detailed recommendations to the Secretary of State on the need to tackle excessive school-level practices which are contributing to excessive teacher workload and working hours.
“By putting practical proposals to the Department for Education and by engaging constructively in the Programme of Talks, the NASUWT has persuaded the Secretary of State and the Chief Inspector of Schools of the need for action to tackle workload excessive and bureaucratically burdensome management practices.
“The NASUWT will continue its engagement with the Department for Education to secure further progress in tackling the implementation problems which have arisen as a consequence of the direction of travel of coalition government policies.”
