Milburn report is “stark reminder” that managers must act to develop young people
Today’s report from the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission is a stark reminder to managers of the urgent need to develop the potential of the next generation, says the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).
The report, launched by social mobility tsar Alan Milburn, includes a call for the government to commit to end youth unemployment by 2020, with greater provision of quality apprenticeships, and points out that the professions are set to expand dramatically.
Petra Wilton, CMI’s Director of Strategy, says:
"Developing the potential of the next generation is at the heart of good management and leadership. The UK needs a million new managers by 2020* and we’ll need many more in the years that follow, so today’s report is a stark reminder that managers must act to give young people opportunities to develop leadership and management skills from an early age. That means providing high quality apprenticeships and working with the education system to provide good quality work experience."
"We also need to embed employability in education, with a greater focus from schools on employability outcomes for their pupils, and with management modules becoming mandatory in higher education, to give students in different disciplines more opportunities to learn to lead."
"The professions recognise that we have to help young people understand the opportunities they could have through professional careers, show them that they can aspire to the professions and create diverse entry routes. Professions Week, which takes place from 10-16 November, and will shine a light on how the professions are responding to this challenge."
