NASUWT comments on Tristram Hunt’s speech to Labour Party Conference

Commenting on the speech to the Labour Party Conference by Shadow Education Secretary Tristram Hunt, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union in the UK, said:

“I welcome Tristram Hunt’s recognition of the vital role played by teachers and by support staff in schools in delivering a world-class education to our children and young people.

“The education legacy that the Coalition Government inherited was a strong one.

“Numeracy and literacy levels were the highest ever; real progress had been made in tackling the impact of disadvantage on educational participation and attainment, and a greater proportion of young people were going on to further and higher education.

“Despite the efforts of the teaching workforce, this legacy is being squandered by the Coalition Government.

“I welcome Labour’s acknowledgement of the importance of collaboration and partnership, rather than competition, as the best way to secure the highest standards of education for all children and young people.”
