ATT President hails student numbers growth as body celebrates 25th anniversary

Mrs Miller has been President for just over three months and has used her speech as an opportunity to elaborate on what the Association had been focused on during her tenure so far.

As well as the increase in student numbers, re-invigorated strategies to engage with employers and branches and an energetic campaign to increase the ATT’s media profile also featured.

Drawing upon the key points of her address, President of the ATT Natalie Miller, commented:

“Since taking the reigns as President I have tried to keep the focus of the Association towards some key objectives in order for us to move confidently into the future. Firstly, the robust nature and continually high calibre of our candidates continues to reassure us of the quality of our Taxation Technician qualification. However, in order to ensure our high standards are maintained, we are undertaking a number of reviews including consideration of the e-assessment process, the interaction of our qualifications with those of other professional bodies and the way in which our own qualification linked to that of Chartered Tax Adviser can be offered as an even more attractive proposition to those wishing to progress in tax.

“I view the ATT as a family and we are ultimately here to serve and represent our members in the best way possible. We continue to put forth the views of members to the wider profession, the general public and HMRC.

“We also recognise that a great number of our members are dependent on the support of their employers, ranging from financial support for exam fees and subscriptions to allowing time to be spent on our steering groups, branch committees and on Council. Accordingly, we have increased our engagement with employers, both by meeting with them and by keeping in touch with them through our regular surveys and newsletters.

“Many of our members are most directly involved with us via the branch network, operated jointly with the CIOT. Having twice been Chairman of the East Anglia branch, I know that branch involvement is both demanding and rewarding and it has been a delight to visit a number of branches already; I have visits to many others planned for the year ahead.

“Finally, we have remained committed to making our voice heard on tax matters, both by making representations to government and HMRC and by issuing press releases to highlight issues to a wider audience. As we begin down the path towards our golden anniversary, I am as proud of what we have achieved as I am excited for the ways in which we are shaping the future.”

Notes for editors

1.        Association of Taxation Technicians

The Association is a charity and the leading professional body for those providing UK tax compliance services. Our primary charitable objective is to promote education and the study of tax administration and practice. One of our key aims is to provide an appropriate qualification for individuals who undertake tax compliance work. Drawing on our members' practical experience and knowledge, we contribute to consultations on the development of the UK tax system and seek to ensure that, for the general public, it is workable and as fair as possible. Our members are qualified by examination and practical experience. They commit to the highest standards of professional conduct and ensure that their tax knowledge is constantly kept up to date. Members may be found in private practice, commerce and industry, government and academia.

The Association has over 7,500 members and Fellows together with over 5,000 students. Members and Fellows use the practising title of 'Taxation Technician' or ‘Taxation Technician (Fellow)’ and the designatory letters 'ATT' and 'ATT (Fellow)' respectively.
