High-quality vocational learning needs improved funding

Responding to the announcement by Labour leader Ed Miliband on proposals for new technical degrees, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:

“The NASUWT welcomes any efforts to raise the status of vocational qualifications and to extend opportunities for the 50% or so of young people who do not go to university.

“It is vital that for the UK to succeed and remain competitive in the world, the workforce of the future is equipped with high-quality vocational as well as academic qualifications.

“But access to continued high-quality learning has to be matched by improved student funding for technical degrees and other vocational qualifications.

“Employers who say they want to see greater skills in the workforce also have to put their money where their mouths are and play their part in helping to build the highly-skilled economy our country needs.”
