What’s the future for Maritime Air Power in the UK?
To coincide with the official naming ceremony of HMS Queen Elizabeth, the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Air Power Group has published a discussion paper on the current and future of maritime air power in the United Kingdom.
On 4 July, the first of the UK's new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers is set to be launched, which represents an important milestone in restoring Britain's naval power. Following a seminar held at No.4 Hamilton Place in October 2013, which brought together senior officers from across the Armed Forces as well as leaders of industry, this paper aims to take a dispassionate look at a contentious area of UK defence at a pertinent time for decision-making.
Air Marshal Iain W McNicoll CB CBE FRAeS, Chairman of the Air Power Group says:
"The launch of HMS Queen Elizabeth on the 4th of July is a milestone in UK maritime air power, but it is only a part of a complex web of capability. The Air Power Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society has examined all of that complexity, both now and into the future, noting the difficult choices that have been made, and the ones still to come, if the UK is to meet the ambitions outlined in the National Security Strategy, and the capabilities required by Future Force 2020. The Air Power Group intends this paper to stimulate debate and welcomes views and comments on it.”
