CIOB takes chartered status to Americas

The Chartered Institute of Building’s President Peter Jacobs and CIOB Chief Executive Chris Blythe are on a two week visit to the USA and Canada to promote chartered membership and develop Institute activity in the region.

Arriving in New York on 12 May ahead of a hectic two week programme, the visit to the Americas is part of the CIOB’s strategic plan which will enable the Institute to play a major role in supporting industry, professionalism and key development projects in the region.

The visit began with CIOB Past President Roger Flanagan delivering a keynote address at the ENR+Dodge Global Construction Summit in New York in which he discussed global construction trends. Several further meetings, including the signing of a MoU with the New York Building Congress have been convened to explore opportunities for increased collaboration with education and professional bodies throughout the region.

Commenting on the visit, Amy Gough, Head of Global Branch Operations said: “The Americas represent a major opportunity for growth in our activities as an Institute. Since launching an office in the region, we’ve witnessed a growth in demand for professional qualifications; particularly in our new internationally recognised Chartered Construction Manager descriptor.

“The visit emphasizes our continued commitment to the region and we are keen to align ourselves with local organisations such as the American Council for Construction Excellence and the New York Building Congress to share best practice and deliver high quality CPD and training.”

The North American construction market is forecast to grow by up to 40% by 2025. Construction is not expected to be as significant in Latin America although growth opportunities exist in finding cost-effective mass housing solutions in the region.

The CIOB has more than 400 members in the Americas which cover the USA, Canada, Caribbean and South and Central America and further information can be accessed at: www.ciob.org/near-you/americas.
