NASUWT comments on College of Teaching poll
Commenting on the publication of the Sutton Trust’s poll of teachers on plans by the Prince’s Teaching Institute to introduce a College of Teaching, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in the UK, said:
“The outcomes of this poll reflect the longstanding views of the NASUWT on the proposals to establish a College of Teaching.
“The findings of the poll, particularly that teachers are yet to be convinced of the value that any such College could play in enhancing and supporting the profession and their scepticism about the extent to which membership would represent value for money, are issues which have been raised by the NASUWT consistently.
“In particular, the Union has questioned the credibility of a College being created in an environment where teaching has become, effectively, deregulated as a result of the policies of this Coalition Government.
“At a time when teachers and their professional status have been attacked on an almost daily basis by government ministers, inspection bodies and commentators, it is understandable that teachers are deeply skeptical about whether a College of Teaching could bring any benefit to their working lives.”
