NASUWT comments on the speech by Sir Michael Wilshaw on early years provision

Commenting on the speech by Sir Michael Wilshaw today, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union said:

“Children make the best progress in early years settings that have qualified teachers and other highly-trained staff

“Unfortunately the Coalition policy in relation to early years is to seek to get this important provision on the cheap.

“The Coalition Government’s approach to early years education, combined with cuts to Sure Start provision and education funding in general, are deeply damaging to the life chances children and young people.

“Fine words from Michael Wilshaw will not resolve this problem.

“What is required is investment in early years education and a reversal of the damaging policies which have been intended to drive down costs to allow private companies to make more profit rather than to provide the best provision for all young children, including the most disadvantaged.”
