NASUWT responds to CBI comment on education reform
Responding to the comments made by John Cridland, CBI Director-General, on the need for further reform in the education system, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:
“The CBI has correctly identified the need for breadth and balance in the curriculum and for a broader assessment of school performance which takes account of schools' achievements in nurturing and developing young people’s talents and skills.
“The CBI is also right to highlight the problem of narrow school performance measures and a hit and run accountability system which has led to ‘gaming’ in the system, narrowing of the curriculum and teaching to the test.
“An accountability system is needed that is fit for purpose and that supports schools to ensure that all young people are enabled to reach their full potential before progressing into the workplace, training or higher education.
“The CBI’s comments should provoke a closer examination of the impact of the Coalition Government’s education policies and whether they will genuinely help all young people to achieve and to compete successfully in the global economy.”
