NASUWT welcomes decision on teachers’ pay

Commenting on the announcement from the Chief Minister that a 4% pay uplift for teachers in Jersey has been guaranteed, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers' union in Jersey and across the UK, said:

“This announcement will be welcomed by the teaching profession.

“It represents many weeks of hard work and discussion between the NASUWT and States officials.

“Following a lawful ballot, NASUWT members have been engaged in action short of strike action to seek to secure pay and working conditions which reflect their role as dedicated professionals.

“Their reasonable and measured approach and support for constructive dialogue with States officials has secured not only this positive outcome on pay, but also a mechanism through which progress can now be made on other issues relating to conditions of service.

“Throughout this process, the NASUWT has maintained its commitment to workforce modernisation through constructive dialogue and we welcome the fact that the States have now committed to working in social partnership.

“Teachers’ pay and conditions of service are inextricably linked to providing high standards of education for all children and young people.”

Marina Mauger, NASUWT Jersey Negotiating Secretary, said:

“On behalf of our members, I am extremely pleased that all the hard work to resolve this dispute amicably in recent weeks has come to fruition.

“The NASUWT has secured real improvements in terms and conditions for teachers and we look forward to securing further improvements as we embark on social partnership.”
