NASUWT comments ahead of publication of GCSE results

Commenting ahead of the publication of GCSE results tomorrow, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“Tomorrow’s GCSE results will be the culmination of an immense amount of hard work by pupils and their teachers.

“Sadly, all of the hard work and success will be subsumed in the political game playing in which the examination system is now embroiled.

“The fact that GCSEs are challenging and demanding qualifications is buried in an avalanche of politically motivated, false claims of grade inflation, dumbing-down and easy options.

“The reality for young people and teachers is that the Coalition Government’s endless interference with, and denigration of, the qualifications system is causing uncertainty and anxiety and dashing hopes, aspirations and life chances.

“Young people and our public education service deserve better.”
